"In rural Kāpiti, Te Kāhu Tiu, located in the Reikorangi valley just outside Waikanae, is a restorative youth justice oasis that is poised to carry out important life-changing work.
“Restorative justice helps people reconnect with their sense of purpose and belonging, to their family and community,” explains centre co-founder and programme director Amelia Trotter".

"They will be growing their own food, farming their own food and then learning how to harvest and prepare food from scratch.
They'll be eating meals in a whānau environment - a lot of these kids probably haven't had that. We are going to provide a safe space for all of this to happen".

"Te Kāhu Tiu has been the dream of Amelia Trotter for more than three decades.
Trotter studied psychology and criminology at Victoria University, and when she did her Master’s in criminal justice, she worked with a lot of young offenders. She noticed these young offenders had all suffered some form of trauma in their lives, and a lot of them had no chance to turn their lives around.
That’s when she decided she wanted to start up a youth justice centre".
